About Sunshine Massage School and our staff

The school is situated in a quiet, leafy, residential neighborhood in the Northeastern part of the city. Public transportation easily is available to and from school, either by taxi, tuk-tuk or bus and it is walking distance from the Tapae Square. This is a safe and easy town to get around and many of our students hire push bikes to travel to and from the school. There are many tasty restaurants nearby, in particular a great vegetarian restaurant that is just a 5 minute walk from the school.

There is a wide variety of accommodation available from inexpensive guesthouses to luxury hotels to suit every budget and requirement. Chiang Mai is a wonderfully safe city that is full of people ready to help and advise the novice traveller and for a small city it is able to cater for all tastes and needs. For the precise location of the school, and for specific directions for arriving by taxi, here is a printer friendly page: the map.

Sunshine Massage School was founded by Max Scheuermeier, who settled in Chiang Mai in 1995. In April of 1997, he met Asokananda in the Lahu village training centre, they quickly became good friends. While taking a beginner’s course in Thai massage and over the next several years, he had long discussions with Asokananda about traditional Thai massage. There was a need to have a school in Chiang Mai to continue and develop the tradition that Asokananda learnt in his years as a monk and during his apprenticeship with the Masters of Thai massage.

In late 2002, Max made a commitment to start a Thai massage school in Chiang Mai to offer Thai Massage classes using Asokananda’s teachings. Max began soliciting the funds needed to build the school from the existing Sunshine Network members and people that had worked with Asokananda. Contributions went well, but more money was needed before construction could begin. One of Asokananda teachers Robert Henderson spoke to Max about Jasmine, a well-known spiritual worker and builder. Max quickly became convinced that she was the right person to manage the project to have the school built,, but he couldn’t understand how she could possibly construct the school with the limited funds they had available. Within two weeks, Jasmine had arranged bank financing for the balance of the construction expenses, and had prepared an architectural plan for the building. Construction of the school was completed in five months and the school opened on 1 November 2004.

Our students often comment that the two-story building that houses Sunshine Massage School has excellent energy. It is beautifully constructed in traditional Thai style architecture; with old teak plank flooring used in the training & practice rooms and with open spaces surrounding the courtyard on the ground floor. Fresh air flows naturally around the building bringing with it fresh free-flowing energy.
